Biography:
Ian A. Lane, RN, Ph.D., is a nursing epidemiologist and measurement scientist specializing in the development and application of psychometrics and longitudinal latent variable modeling to nursing research. Grounded in philosophical pragmatism, his work bridges the theory-practice gap by translating mid-range nursing theories and conceptual models into testable statistical frameworks, supporting the development and validation of person-centered outcome measures in clinical nursing.
As Director of the Providence College Department of Nursing’s Center for Nursing Research, Dr. Lane helps advance faculty development and scholarship by providing methodological mentorship and statistical consultation, and collaborative support in project development. He additionally engages undergraduate nursing students in foundational research experiences, through hands-on involvement in study design, data analysis, and theory-driven reviews of the literature. He also helps to teach fundamental nursing research courses within the Department of Nursing.
At the state level, Dr. Lane is working to develop and coordinate Rhode Island’s first-ever Center of Excellence in Nursing Research, based out of Providence College, uniting diverse faculty and students from across institutions, as well as leadership from local hospital systems, to elevate the rigor and clinical impact of nursing scholarship statewide and across the region.
